eye makeup

There’s no one “right” way to do eye makeup, but rather it is up to each and every individual's creativity and personal preference. If you’re someone who likes a full glam look, you’ll probably prefer a smokey eye over someone who has a more natural makeup aesthetic and would feel more comfortable with a subtle liner or neutral-toned eye look. No matter which you prefer, there’s an eye makeup style that will fit your vibe.

There are a few ways to make your eyes look bigger by using eye makeup. One way by applying a white eyeliner on your waterline. By extending the look of the whites of your eyes, it helps to give you a more wide-awake, bright-eyed appearance. Similarly, you can apply a light shade of highlighter to the inner corners of your eyes along with the brow bone. Buffing a neutral brown eyeshadow into the crease of your lid will also add definition and make eyes look bigger. And don’t forget to curl your lashes and follow with a super lengthening mascara!

To remove eye makeup, you’ll want to make sure you have the right product(s), so that you don’t wind up rubbing or tugging at the sensitive eye area. Because the area requires a gentle touch and hydration, it’s important to enlist the help of a moisturizing eye makeup remover, which will remove waterproof formulas, too. Soak some on a cotton ball and hold it to your lid; wipe clean after a few seconds and follow with water to rinse. For a non-greasy feel, try our oil-free version.

Eye makeup can last up to two years, depending on the formula. Powder shadows that are used with a brush rather than your finger will last longer because there’s less contamination and oils, while cream and liquid eye makeup, including liquid liners and mascara, have a shorter shelf life– around 3-6 months once open. We suggest labeling your products with the date you opened them, so you can keep track of how long you’ve been using them and know when they need to be replaced.

There are many types of eye makeup products, including eyeshadow, eye primer, eyeliner, mascara, brow makeup, and more. Eyeshadow typically comes in powder or cream in a rainbow assortment of colors and is used on the lid to create texture and dimension. To ensure your shadow stays in place, you would use an eye primer on your lid. Eyeliner is used to line the rims of the eye, both on the top, bottom, and inner waterline areas. Mascara is for the lashes and has many different jobs, such as lengthening, darkening, volumizing, and dramatizing. Brow makeup, whether a pencil, powder, gel, or mousse, can be used to conceal sparse brows and groom brow hairs into place.

In addition to applying your eye makeup based on personal preference, you’ll also want to take your eye shape into account. For instance, to apply eye makeup for hooded eyes, it’s important to focus on what will be seen when you look straight ahead– hooded eyes have extra skin, so they tend to make eye makeup disappear. Because of that, you should concentrate your eye shadow above your natural crease to create the illusion of a deeper-set eye. Do this by buffing a brown shade above your crease. To help lift the look of hooded eyes, blend your shadow and liner up and out. And definitely incorporate a lighter shadow on the inner corners and extra mascara on the outer corners of your eyes; both will help to make your eyes look bigger and less heavy.
