Lip Makeup FAQs

There are several different types of lip makeup products, including lipstick, lip gloss, lip stain, lip liner, and lip balm, each serving a distinct purpose, and many of them are designed to be used in combination. (For a polished, everyday look, we love combining a lip liner with a lip gloss.) Lipstick, alone, is more of an umbrella term than one specific product, as there are so many types of lipstick, such as liquid, cream, crayon, and the traditional bullet. And within those categories, there are differing textures such as matte and high-shine, with some formulas delivering all-day wear. Lip gloss is great for a subtle, yet shiny look, coming in variants from clear to shimmer to slightly pigmented. A lip stain will impart a long-wear look that gives a very natural effect as it simply stains the lips a certain shade. Lip liner helps to set the scene for whichever lip product you follow with. It helps to define the natural borders of the lip and prevent your lipstick from feathering. Lip balm is more of a treatment product and meant to boost hydration and treat dry lips, but our new Lifter Glaze Lip Balm is more of a hybrid, promising softer lips, but with a wash of subtle color. Long-lasting lip products come in a variety of formats, but the common thread is that they’re meant to last for hours and hours, allowing you to skip reapplication, regardless of whether you’re eating, drinking, etc. Our Super Stay Teddy Tint is a liquid lip tint that lasts for up to 12 hours and gives you a transfer-proof, subtly blurred finish for the prettiest, hazy pout. Super Stay Vinyl Ink, on the other hand, is all about a high shine, patent leather finish that packs a punch with bold hues and 16-hour wear. Super Stay Matte Ink offers the same heavily pigmented shades and liquid formulation that lasts for 16 hours, but it dries down to a matte finish for a chic one-dimensional look. Super Stay Ink Crayon is like a lip liner and lipstick bullet in one, with a pointed tip for targeted application and a creamy, yet matte texture for 8 hours of wear. Our longest-lasting formula, Super Stay 24 Lipstick, will buy you 24 hours of wear, as its name implies, and has a two-step application process that utilizes a unique micro-flex technology that ensures no caking, flaking, or drying as you wear it. There are many ways to do lip makeup, and which one you choose will depend on the look that you’re going for. A great place to start is with a lip liner to create an outline of your lips and then fill in with color. Want a high-shine look? Finish with a gloss on top. If you want to create a flawless red lipstick look, a romantic bitten lip makeup look, or an ombré effect, head to our lip tips blog for all of the best lip makeup tutorials. Our Maybelline New York lip makeup blog is a great place to find lip makeup ideas. It is your one-stop shop for all things lip makeup tutorials, techniques, and pro tips. If you want to make your lips look bigger with makeup, we recommend using lip liner and drawing slightly outside of your natural lip shape to create a natural-looking, fuller pout. Then, go in with a similar shade of lipstick; a little bit lighter is usually the way to go. Finish with lip gloss on top– adding some extra shine will reflect light and add dimension for more volume, especially if you’re using a plumping gloss like our Lifter Plump. Check out our full tutorial on how to fake fuller lips. Lip makeup can last up to two years if stored properly and if it’s a drier formulation, such as a crayon, bullet, or lip liner. More liquid formulations have a shorter shelf life as bacteria thrive in liquid environments, especially if you store them in a humid space like the bathroom. As a good rule of thumb, lip gloss and liquid lipstick last for about six months to a year. Be sure to always close the container tightly to prevent air and water from getting in, and keep an eye out for any color or smell changes, too. You can do makeup for thin lips and make them appear bigger by strategically placing your lip liner outside of your natural lip line. From there, we recommend using a lighter shade of lipstick as darker shades can make your lips look even smaller. Finish with a plumping gloss such as our Lifter Plump. You can also skip the lipstick and just go for the liner and gloss combo, and thin lips will still appear bigger. You can remove lip makeup with a liquid makeup remover. If you’re wearing a long-wear lipstick formula, look for one that’s formulated for removing waterproof makeup. But, if you don’t have makeup remover, washing with an oil cleanser or balm should get the job done. You may just have to use some extra elbow grease while scrubbing to fully remove your lip makeup.
