After being inside all year, we should all be makeup experts. What else was there to do, but experiment with looks? So, when it comes to this season’s super-flattering white eyeliner trend, let’s just say you’re ready. Seen on the hottest celebs— Margot Robbie and Janelle Monáe, we’re looking at you!—white eyeliner literally pops on any skin tone. Another bonus: it will actually help to open and brighten eyes! From a fierce white wing to a white take on a retro 60s look, makeup artist Maria Alvarado shows us 5 reasons why you need white eyeliner in your life right now.
Take your eyeliner to the next level with this double liner look. Maria starts by applying a black liquid liner first, creating a wing on each side. Then, she uses her white pencil eyeliner to trace above the black liner for a pop of color. She finishes the look by tracing her bottom waterline with white liner to brighten eyes!
Get the bold, graphic look you see in magazines. The key is in the cut crease: “Draw your cut crease liner with your eyes open, looking straight ahead into the mirror,” says Maria. This will ensure both eyeliner applications are even.
The secret to the Flame Wing? Tape! Maria sticks on regular household tape from “the outer corner of the eyes to the tail of the eyebrows to map out the dramatic line” that starts her wing. Then, she finishes the look with that fierce zigzag.
It’s flashback fabulous. Master this retro, curvy look by following a little advice from Maria: “start out tracing thin lines on both sides [of the eyes] and thicken [the eyeliner lines] once they match."
A look for the truly fierce, this look begins similarly to the Rounded 60’s Retro liner, only it wings out where your white liner connects. Follow with black liner at the lash line. Maria says to be brave, “Don't be afraid to go big and take your white liner out to your eyebrow for a dramatic look.”
Whereas dark eyeliner acts as a picture frame, defining the edges of your eyes, white eyeliner acts as a blank sheet of paper, keeping the possibilities open and edges fresh. Aesthetically speaking, white eyeliner is incredibly edgy and reads 100% modern and cool. Meaning, you could line your grandmother's eyes with white eyeliner and she will be just as on the verge as you are. It’s 100% fresh.
To achieve this effect, line your lower waterline with a white eyeliner and it will make the eyes seem wider and more open.
