Horrible Formula Change

This used to be my Favorite mascara & I have been a loyal customer for many years. It has recently gone through a horrible formula change & is not packaged as Washable Waterproof. It no longer goes on smoothly & constantly clumps & flakes off my lashes. I have now switched brands to another reliable Washable Waterproof and even tossed all my extra Define-A-Lash mascara that were unopened. Why on earth would the formula be changed on a previously amazing product??

New Formula Clumps and Sticks

Posting in hopes Maybelline will reformulate. This has been my go-to for years as it defined my fine eyelashes without clumping. It seems like there has been a recent formula change because it does now clump on my lashes and sticks on them long after I thoroughly wash my face. I image that Maybelline reformulated to use healthier ingredients, but sadly the performance of the product has suffered.

I bought this on a whim, as someone who always goes for lengthening mascaras over volume. I was not expecting it to be this good. I get compliments every few days about how pretty my eyes look. It can also curl your lashes, especially if you use a primer beforehand. It can also make a nice cat or fox eye look. I will keep rebuying, my favorite!

Formula Change?

I have been using Define-A-Lash Washable Very Black for many many years. I change to a new tube every two weeks because of eye sensitivity. I absolutely loved it. BUT over the last several months this mascara does not go on as smoothly as it once did. It clumps more and it is also flaking. I never had this issue before. Did you change the formula? I am very sad and discouraged.

Maybelline please NEVER STOP making this product! I’ve been using it since 2008 and I would be devastated without it! It dries really firm, lets you sculpt your lashes into strands or groups, and holds your lashes’ shape after you curl them. It washes off easily but doesn’t flake or leave a residue if you touch your lashes. Pure magic.

This has always been my favorite mascara - beating out all the expensive department store brands. However, Ive noticed that the last two times I purchased this mascara this is a definite odor I smell when applying. After the first time I thought well maybe a fluke....after purchasing the second one - at a different store - I realized this can't be a fluke. What is going on?

Not the same as it was

This used to be amazing, my holy grail mascara. I have used this mascara and been trying to find similar mascaras to this one since 2005 and this was the one I always came back to. Recently, the formula has changed and it is not producing the same results it has been for years. My eyes have also been irritated lately and I am just now noticing that it is when I wear this mascara.

Clumping and dry

I have used this mascara for over 30 years, but lately it has been awful. I bought from several different stores locally and they were all bad! Clumping and seems dry. I will no longer spend anymore money buying this product that I use to love and receive so many compliments on my lashes!

Used to be amazing

I have loved and used this mascara exclusively for 5-6 years. It was amazing. Recently, something is off or different. It smells awful and the smell gets stronger over time. It’s clumpy, thick and sticky and it’s irritating my eyes. It’s never been like that before. I keep repurchasing it after a few uses because I can’t stand it and thought maybe it was a one off thing. I’m on tube 4 with the same results and I’m so disappointed.

I have used for years...last time they changed the formula it didn't work the same. I was so glad they changed it back. Now it seems to have changed again and includes a potent smell (rose mixed with chemical?). Seems to be getting stronger the longer I have it. Kind of unbearable thought it was expired/bad.

Chemical Smell

I loved this mascara in it they changed the formula. Now it has a VERY strong perfume smell and I can’t wear it without getting a headache. I’m so bummed. I tried the mascara from 4 different vendors thinking it was expired or a bad batch - all of them had the strong smell. My husband lost his smell from Covid and could pick up the smell when we kissed!

Will need a new option moving forward!

I have been using this mascara for over 10 years. To be exact since 2010! I have been a loyal user. My one and only mascara for the last decade, and recently, I am not sure what happened, but I hate it. I have purchased 3 different tubes thinking maybe the store had sold expired (if they even expire) mascara. Three different stores and the same problem with all of them. Weird stronf smell, clumps like never before, and it seems very thick from what it used to be. Very sad to see this happening. Will have to find a new option for sure!

Why the change?

I should have checked the reviews sooner. I've now bought three tubes with disappointing results, thinking I just got a bad tube. Apparently Maybelline has changed the formula. My last three tubes have had a peculiar smell (kind of like walnuts), seemed dry, clumpy and flaky going on, and flakes off within a few hours. I will be on the search for a new mascara. I previously used Maybelline Full n Soft, for many, many years, however a similar change to that formula caused me to abandon that line. Why do you keep changing a good thing? I have very sensitive eyes, and Maybelline has been one of the few mascaras I can tolerate. Please change back to the original formula!

I have used this for years. The brush and consistency was perfect to make my lashes so long! But what happened to the brownish black? I can't find it anywhere, the black is too harsh for my skin tone. I've tried other Maybelline mascara products , but they are all too thick or have a brush that won't lift/separate. I hate it when a company changes a long time product!!

Why change a good thing!?!

I have very sensitive eyes. All mascara makes my eyes water. My daughter recommended this mascara years ago - and I tried it and loved it!! I even have an ongoing subscription from Amazon. Recently I received a shipment and when I put it on, my eye started watering and burning. Then I noticed that it went on as though it was old, super flakey and dry. I figured the tube was just old so I went to Target and picked up a new one - same thing! Ugh. Now I have to find a new mascara. Why would Maybelline change a good thing! Money? If that is the issue, don't change the liquid, increase the price. I'd pay it.

Hi! Im so glad I decided to check about whats going on with this mascara? I just bought one and ive been going crazy over here thinking it was me! ITS THE MASCARA. I have flakey, uneven application on! This mascara is expensive and I spend $25-$30 on two! One of my mom and one for me! We've used this mascara for quite literally since 2010. What did you guys change? IM SO UNHAPPY ABOUT THIS! Now I have to find a new one now because this is annoying.

This is the only mascara that lived up to it's claims! Waterproof, wash off & most of all did not flake or smudge. I used the brown-black, perfect color for me & nothing, NOTHING I've tried since, works! Not sure why it was discontinued but please reconsider & bring it back!

Bring Waterproof Back Please!!

I have been using this mascara for over 10 years. It is the best for lengthening and not clumping. The wand is awesome too! It is the only makeup I wear during the summer (other than chapstick) I’m so sad it’s discontinued :(

Absolutely love this mascara, it doesn’t clump or come out on the wand in a mass amount. I have long lashes already and it goes on perfectly without making it look like I could blink a few times and fly away. I’m having a really hard time finding it in Canada lately. Did you discontinue this product to Canada??

Best mascara ever but

I’ve been using this mascara for over 10 years, it’s better than anything I can find at Macy’s. The only make up I wear is mascara (and brows) so mascara is very important. The only reason I didn’t give it five is because I feel it’s quality has the client in recent years but I still use it

Sadly it comes to an end for me

Have been using for a number of years. Either it’s dried up within a week or it has to many globs. Can’t get more than a week out of one tube. It’s a shame how bad it is.

My favorite mascara of old time. Getting harder and harder to find. I hope it's not getting discontinued? I don't know if it's that the product is just a tiny bit thinner or would that the brush is very sturdy, but this really does lengthen without clumping. Only mascara I've ever found that really does that. Love love love

Q: The wand/brush won’t go back into the tube the last four tubes that I have bought after two uses. The wand is kept free of buildup and I have tried scraping out the inside opening of the tube to open it up more to no avail.

Q: Why isn't there a brownish-black available? And, will there be? I love this mascara, but, unfortunately, will have to start trying other brands because the black is too harsh. Thank you. And, hope to see brownish-black available soon!

Q: Good Day, I have been using Define-A-Lash lengthening washable mascara since it was launched in South Africa. Currently it is not available anywhere in the Western Cape Region, Mosselbay, are code: 6500. Please advise if this was replaced at all?

Q: Hi, I'm having a hard time finding my favorite go-to washable mascara - Define a Lash in Black. I just did a search on CVS's website and didn't see it. I haven't gone all over looking, as I really don't have time, especially if you've discontinued it.
